Jamika Crowner, owner of Fantasy Faces Lash & Brow Studio in East Point, Georgia, says it’s their “goal to provide affordable beauty luxury for the modern woman” at her beauty oasis.

“Our services include eyelash extensions, microblading, massage, facials, full body waxing, makeup and classes,” says the makeup artist who has a wealth of experience (body painting and FX) and a talent that has landed her work in film, print, runway, live productions, television and in music videos.


Here, Crowner talks about her path to success.

What is your day-to-day like at work?
Honestly, my day-to-day varies. Some days I do a lot of lashes and makeup and on other days I do classes and professional training.


What inspires you to show up at work every day?
I love what I do and I also love our clients; that’s my motivation.

How did you determine your career path?
I’ve been a beauty professional for over 13 years. It started at my alma mater Hampton University where I did the makeup for all the fashion shows, cabarets and events that we had. That’s segued into a beautiful career.

What industries connect to your career choice?
There are several different facets of the beauty industry that can be entered under this career path including aesthetics, massage therapy and cosmetology. You can also go into the medical side of aesthetics.

Describe the skills that will be essential to future business leaders and innovators.
Continuing education is the key. The beauty industry is forever changing and you always want to stay current and familiar with the happenings in your field. New product innovations, techniques and skills can only elevate you and your career. Additionally, for those wishing to open up a business, I suggest business courses on marketing and business management.

Describe innovative methods you apply to your business and life.
Personally, I always seek to find solutions to the questions that have not been asked hence staying ahead of the pack.

Describe goal setting methods you use and how you evaluate your success.
I am all about visual references. First, I write out a plan of what I would like to achieve. Next, I use visual references to reach the goal. There’s something special about creating a vision that is not only in your mind but realized in your daily routine.

How have they supported you? What best practices have they shared?
Synthe has been a great support and mentor throughout my career. She was there in the beginning when I was ready to elevate my skill set using airbrush makeup. She continues to inspire by introducing me to new and Innovative skills and techniques.

Joy is a great supporter of beauty professionals and is very genuine. She’s an amazing trainer and teacher as well. I acquired my micro-blading techniques and skills from her.

Name your favorite role models for success in two different industries.
Kimora Lee Simmons has been a role model for me since I was young. I saw how she grew her Baby Phat clothing line to an empire that included makeup, fragrance, clothing and a high-end line. I aspire to be a mogul like her.

Describe why lifelong learning is important to you.
A wise man continues to grow and learn. Knowing that there is always more to learn to elevate yourself and your consciousness is why lifelong learning is very important.

Describe the voice of success that you hear in your head.
God.

What role does technology play in your daily life?
Technology plays an integral role in my everyday life. Especially social media.

What software and technology tools have made the biggest difference in your life?
There is one technology system that I love that has played such an amazing role. And that’s the mind-body processing system.

Define your personal culture.
I live by this motto: “It’s the glamorous life.” So for me, my culture is glamorous and beautiful aesthetics, surroundings.

How does music impact and influence you?
Music definitely sets the vibe. And I’m all about positive energy. I enjoy all types of music played in the spa-like soft R&B. I love [John] Coltrane, so a nice classic jazz mix is great for positive vibes.

Describe your favorite vacation spot.
Anywhere with blue water, sandy beaches and drinks with umbrellas.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
I will turn the negative energy to positive and hate to love. Because love and positivity transcend all problems.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Nothing. You have to love the skin that you’re in. It’s our quirks and differences that make us special.

Please share skin care tips for women of color
1. Exfoliate.
2. Don’t over cleanse your skin; it leads to excessive drying.
3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.
4. Spot-treat dark spots with glycolic products.
5. Sunscreen is a must.
6. Treat yourself to a facial.
