It was definitely a night to remember when Nigeria-born designer Esé Azénabor showcased her most elaborate spring/summer collection titled “Objet D’Art” in front of a sold-out crowd earlier this month. As the name indicates, the collection was indeed a true work of art. The show was held at the Iconic Hall of State at Fair Park in the heart of Dallas. The location was the perfect backdrop for the designer’s vision of art imitating fashion. Azénabor’s SS19 presentation was brilliantly orchestrated with 43 evening wear and 17 bridal pieces gracing the runway. The energy that flowed through the room was royal, complete with the evening’s mistress of ceremony Christine Butcher and the fashionistas, socialites, celebrities and industry professionals eager to take in the beauty.
Following the show, rolling out sat down with Azénebor to discuss fashion, inspiration and philanthropy.
Your show was not a traditional show. Share the process that you followed to produce such a magnificent showcase.
I was particularly satisfied with this collection as I took my time and didn’t [bow] to New York Fashion Week’s harsh deadlines. The time [that] elapsed from idea creation to completion took a total of three years.
You are known for your detailed couture designs. What inspired your newest collection, Objet D’Art?
The inspiration for this series of intricate designs originated from my tour of the St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City while I was in town for my New York Fashion Week debut in 2015. I was fascinated by [the] stained glass and various geometrical shapes and did my best to emulate those elements in this collection through intricate beading, embroidery, and the combination of different materials.
I might add that all the garments were completely hand sewn with custom fabrics exclusively created for this collection in the fashion house’s atelier based in Dallas. I can truly say that I stepped into new terrain turning my vision into reality.
You are known for your community and charitable involvement in Dallas. How did you include that passion in this year’s showcase?
As with most of my events, the Objet D’Art showcase was tied to a local charity, this time to Action With Compassion Dallas Inc., a nonprofit which combats domestic violence. I wasn’t solely focused on showcasing beautiful garments but I also wanted to leave guests with a deeper message. It was very dear to my heart to demonstrate women’s empowerment and the message that beauty and fashion come in all sizes, shapes and colors. Therefore, I included over 40 powerful influencers from all walks of life as models.
What is your goal and how do you want women to feel when they wear your designs? My goal is to empower women through the art of fashion. Any woman wearing this collection will stand taller, be more confident, and smile harder in the mirror.
