Actress Tika Sumpter came under heavy criticism from some fans on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, after she shared on Instagram a photo of her gay cousin’s wedding.
The wedding photo post, which has over 35,000 likes, was captioned by the actress: “I love you, cousin. I’m so proud of you. Can’t believe my peanut is grown and married now!
“Love is love is love. P.S. we only spreading love here. So if you ain’t got nothin’ positive to contribute…get. Love y’all,” added Sumpter in her caption.
Sumpter’s post, which seemed to show support for the LGBTQ community, ignited a debate in the comment section; with some fans accusing the actress of pushing the gay agenda.
“Ur not spreading love. U spreading some Hollyweird..” said one Instagram user.
“They’re legally married; not spiritually,” added another Instagram user.
Other users took a more liberal view, maintaining that it was important to recognize that the world was changing and that marriage of any kind should be respected.
“I agree with letting people love who they love and minding the business that pays me,” said one Instagram user in support of the post.
“What is sad is assuming someone is not going to show love because they are the same sex. Sometimes love comes in being honest about what is going on in the world,” added another very vocal poster.
In March 2019 it was announced that Sumpter would be joining the cast of “Black-ish.”
