As David Ortiz continues to recover under heavy guard and sedation at the Massachusetts General Hospital’s ICU in Boston, the media has learned the identity of the man who allegedly hired the assassins to shoot Ortiz.
CNN reports the Dominican National Police and prosecutors say the suspected mastermind behind the “complex” assassination plot is still on the loose but has been identified as Alberto Miguel Rodriguez Mota.
Rodriguez Mota reportedly used a liaison named Gabriel Alexander Perez Vizcaíno, who acted as a go-between for Rodriguez Mota and reputed gang leader, José Eduardo “Chunky” Ciprián, 24, who also conspired to orchestrate the hit, but did so from jail.
Ciprián is already in jail for a murder charge that’s not related to his case involving the shooting of the Boston Red Sox’s legendary slugger, CNN says. Prosecutors say he and another man named Carlos Alverez coordinated the hit from the jail and dispersed the $8,000 — or 400K Dominican pesos — to have the “sicarios” (meaning “assassins) carry out the shooting of Ortiz.
So far, Dominican law enforcement officials told the media they have arrested their 11th suspect while still working to find Rodriguez Mota. Nine of the suspects are being remanded to jail for at least a year while they await their trial date. These and other details are scheduled to be discussed during a Wednesday press conference.
Thus far, there has been no official word on why Ortiz was the target of the shooting, though speculation is running wild, according to the Boston Herald and New York Post, that Ortiz ran afoul of one of the suspects.
Meanwhile, Ortiz’s wife, Tiffany, delivered a touching Father’s Day message for her three-time World Series-winning husband.
