What advice do you have to other women who want to be in your position?
You have to have thick skin. … You’re going to be faced with probably sexist remarks coming at you. You’re going to be faced with females coming at you. … I will say be true to yourself and always dream big.
What can be done to mend the relationship between the Black community and the police?
We’re going to have to get out … and get the community to trust us. It also falls back on us … to hold ourselves accountable for the positions that we hold and know that society holds us [to] a higher level. We need to respect that.
It also boils down to leadership. If you have good leadership in place, you’re going to have a good team. … I have an acronym in my office. It’s called E.A.R. because we operate in excellence, accountability and respect.
Do you have any advice for young adults entering the workforce?
Instead of wanting to be a police officer, go ahead and start dreaming big to be the chief. … Instead of being in the movies, dream of being the director of those movies. Dream big and stay focused and know this [is] what you want and go for it and don’t let anybody deter you from your dream.
