A week before the election, Lil Wayne jumped on the rapper bandwagon and supported Donald Trump. Allegedly, Wayne and our current president discussed the half-trillion-dollar plan to invest in Black businesses and communities. Lil Wayne tweeted, “just had a great meeting with @realdonaldtrump besides what he’s done so far with criminal reform, the platinum plan is going to give the community real ownership…” Seriously? It must be “lean” talking.
Dumbfounded and confused by the release of the accused killer of George Floyd, to the lack of criminal charges in the unapologetic killing of Breonna Taylor, Black America is pissed off and not in the mood to be played. We want equal justice and equality, not a plan that doesn’t address disparities within the African American community.
Those disparities didn’t just happen in the last six months. The economic condition for Blacks was fragile before COVID-19, making recovery even harder. Inequality constituted this emergency, and as long as there isn’t a collective conversation happening within the Black community, it won’t end.
Ice Cube, Lil Wayne and others, we applaud your efforts at this late hour, but please take a back seat and let those who know politics speak about it. After the presidency is determined, the obligation to Black America doesn’t disappear.
