How do you actively seek inspiration, or does it find you?
Inspiration finds me. I have never been one of those artists who schedule studio sessions. For me, it happens naturally. I’m in a vibe, and suddenly I want to lay vocals, or a melody hits my head, and boom, I’m running downstairs to my studio. That’s the best thing about having my own personal studio in my home.
Let’s talk about your latest project. What was the inspiration behind it?
Well, this current project is really a [reflection of where I am now in my career, but also in my life. I am in a vibe all of the time. Musically, it really is just an extension of my everyday life. Of course, music drives culture, and culture drives the music, so my life is always an inspiration to create music, but I am at a point where I am carefree, and I am living in the moment, and my music is an extension of that.
Did you rely on faith or your own understanding for this project?
I love that question. Those that know me personally know I am spiritually driven — a divine sense of knowing drives my career. I know I am here for a purpose, and I know my music is part of that purpose.
Most artists have mentors. Who are your mentors?
We have to learn from somewhere. My mentors — musically and in this business — definitely start with my brother Tony Sunshine from the legendary Terror Squad, as well as Pete Warner and Rainy Davis who created the hit record ‘Sweetheart,’ which was covered by Mariah Carey and many others.
