Breadwinner Kane is making it his mission to uphold the legacy of Southern hip-hop. The Huntsville, Alabama-bred rapper, whose given name is Deshun Cain, realized music was his calling after being in the presence of various DJs at his father’s disco club during his childhood.

While drawing inspiration from Southern rap icons like Lil Boosie, Juvenile, Waka Flocka and Kevin Gates, Breadwinner Kane brings his own style and flavor to his music. His most popular single, “Barely Famous,” was produced by Zaytoven and released in 2016, and he recently dropped the single “Shooters,” featuring Boosie Badazz. Currently making his home in Atlanta, Breadwinner Kane spoke with rolling out about his musical inspirations and upcoming projects, which include a new album and summer concert tour.

In general, what led you to music?

My dad used to own a disco club and there used to be DJs present as well. I spent a lot of time with my dad at his club. I also get a lot of inspiration from Michael Jackson as a performer and Three 6 Mafia influenced my rap style.

Let’s talk about your latest project. What was the inspiration behind it?

My upcoming album is called Shooters. I would say a lot of the inspiration behind it came from the successes in the NBA, contrary to the popular belief that it would be about violence.
