It’s no secret there is a huge disconnect in the representation of women, specifically Black women in science and technology-driven fields. The patterns originate in the way our culture teaches young girls in middle and elementary school; and even before that.

Black Girls CODE founder Kimberly Bryant believes mentorship is important in changing the narrative and culture with young women.  By partnering with actress, singer and influencer Willow Smith, Bryant hopes to connect with a larger demographic of young girls and show them by example that technology is more than just cool, it can help us create a better world.  The partnership with Willow Smith was announced in celebration of ‘International Day of the Girl’. “We are so thankful to have the support of Ultimate Ears and Willow Smith to help further amplify the Black Girls CODE movement in establishing equal representation of Black women and girls in the tech sector. Together with like-minded partners helping to drive change, we are creating stronger economies and more equitable societies – ultimately realizing the true potential of democracy through diversity and inclusion.”

Smith is one of the youngest and most recognizable advocates for feminism today. She is heard every week on Red Table Talk alongside her mother Jada Pinkett Smith and grandmother, Adrienne Banfield-Norrism, discussing topics ranging from the changing dynamic of sexuality to mental health awareness, self-esteem and even cultural stereotypes. Smith’s participation in Ultimate Ears through the partnership will allow her full creative freedom with the brand; a role she is excited to step into.

“Ever since I was little, I’ve been an admitted ‘STEM geek’ with a passion for technology. This is why I am thrilled to partner with Black Girls CODE and Ultimate Ears as a way to break the mold not just through my UE FITS, but to spark a conversation around female empowerment within the technology space,” said Smith. “It is important to me and for others to be able to use my platform to help advocate for causes I believe in, one of which is to empower our future generation of female minds in underrepresented spaces.”
