In recent times, it’s becoming more common for Black children to learn how to swim, but that hasn’t always been the case. Swimming wasn’t necessarily a desired sport in Black households, as much as basketball, football or even cheer was. However, recently Black kids are taking lessons, joining swim leagues and even swimming competitively.

Summertime is often synonymous with swimming pools, and before children, particularly Black children, take the plunge, they should take a moment to review these 5 pool safety tips. Swimming is a fun and healthy activity for people of all ages, but it’s important to be safe while enjoying the pool.

1. Make sure your Black children know how to swim

In order for our Black children to be safe, we must ensure that they know how to swim. This means not only enrolling them in swim classes, but also making sure that they know how to swim in case of an emergency. It is our responsibility as parents to make sure that our children are as safe as possible, and teaching them to swim is a key part of that.

2. Supervise your Black children at all times when they are at an apartment pool or pool with no life guard.

Make sure to keep a close eye on your children when they are at the pool. Even if there is a lifeguard present, you should never leave your child unsupervised. This is especially important if the pool is not in a public area.

3. Teach your children about 3 pool-safety life saving tips

It’s never too early to start teaching your children about pool safety. Here are three life-saving tips to share with your little ones:

    • Always stay within arm’s reach of an adult or a swim buddy.
    • Teach your children to never run near the pool – even if they think they can swim.
    • Make sure your children know how to swim and always swim with a buddy.

4. Have a designated swimmer

When swimming in open water, always have a designated swimmer. This person is responsible for watching for any dangers and helping to keep the group safe. They should also be aware of the location of the group and be able to communicate with the group if needed.

5. Keep your pool area clean

Keeping your pool area clean is important for a variety of reasons. Not only does it make the area look nicer, but it also helps to maintain the quality of the water in the pool.

The Black community must not ignore pool safety ever. Pool safety must be part of all pool experiences. A large majority of accidents can be prevented by following some simple safety precautions.
