New York singer Liana Banks wants creatives to learn about the music business

Liana Banks was a part of the Earn Your Masters showcase

Liana Banks was a performer for UnitedMasters x Ally Financial “Earn Your Masters” showcase on March 17. The artist spoke with rolling out about how UnitedMasters has impacted her career and gave tips for other artists who are trying to earn their masters.

How does it feel to be a part of UnitedMasters?

It feels good, especially doing it with a label. The last time I was at SXSW, I was completely independent, so it was fire to be here with a partner.

What are some tips that you have for earning your masters?

You should pay attention to every single aspect of the business when it comes to music. Don’t just go into a session and say “Hey, I’m doing what I love to do something and I’m happy to be in a room.” You need to ask, “How is this masters getting split? What’s the business on this? Who’s getting points on its record?” If you’re a songwriter on the record and you’re doing a lot to get the record played, ask about points. A lot of the time it’s allocated to the producer and the label, but you did all the work. So figure out what you can not only put out but what you can get from what you deserve.

What new music do you have coming out?

I have a single coming out called “Petty.” There’s a fire feature on it, and it’s a female. It’s big New York energy, and I’m so excited about it. It comes out in April.
