Sandi Robinson, a luminary in hospitality and co-founder of the nonprofit ChiGivesBack, is a force to be reckoned with. As director of sales & marketing for The Olympia Companies, she leads Sophy Hyde Park with aplomb. Recognized as the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association’s Department Head of the Year and HSMAI’s Director of Sales and Marketing of the Year, her accolades speak volumes. In an interview with rolling out, Robinson shares insights from her remarkable journey, including her dedication to philanthropy through ChiGivesBack.

Describe the journey that led you to become the director of marketing at The Sophy Hotel.

I have been in the hospitality industry since 16. The last 16 years were spent working in hotels in the downtown market, 14 of which were spent at Lifestyle Boutique properties. It was time for me to move closer to home where a larger impact could be made. Sophy was the perfect fit.

As a Black woman in a leadership position within the hospitality industry, how do you navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with your role?

I navigate with ease now because I have been doing it so long. My responsibility is training the next generation of young Black women in my industry. I can look at every opportunity and decipher if it makes sense for me. This comes from not only knowing yourself but also knowing your strengths and weaknesses.

How does The Sophy Hotel stand out from other luxury accommodations in Chicago?

Sophy is so dope! We embrace the culture and the neighborhood that is Hyde Park. I love going to the lobby and seeing so many of the same people working by the fireplace, taking calls and appointments in our lobby. We are truly Hyde Park’s living room, and for a lot of people, their version of “Cheers.”

Share a particularly memorable campaign or project you’ve spearheaded at The Sophy and the impact it had.

Meslers SHEro series was implemented four weeks after I started. These programs celebrate and highlight women in their respective fields. Every week, a different female DJ was highlighted along with a different spirit sponsor. Giving people an opportunity to not only network but enjoy music and drinks at the same time in a unique setting has proven to be successful event after event.

Talk about ChiGivesBack and its mission.

ChiGivesBack is what happens when your love for community meets your passion for giving back. Our mission is to empower underserved communities in Chicago through impactful programs, leveraging diverse networks, partnerships and resources to address social issues and drive community reinvestment.

How do you manage work-life balance?

I have learned to say “I can’t make it.” Self-care is so important, and you have to take the time to take care of you first. I try to stop filling my calendar up so much. If I know I will have a busy week, I will take a day or two to not do anything after work.

Share any personal rituals or practices that help you recharge and maintain your well-being.

I listen to podcasts, specifically Joe Budden, Crains, Therapy for Black Girls, No Vacancy Live and Dave Ramsey. Between these, they keep my ear to the streets from the hood to the boardroom and keep my mind in the know about finances.

Why should The Sophy be the top choice for visitors seeking an authentic and luxurious Chicago experience?

Hyde Park is the 41st of 77 community areas in Chicago and is one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world. Sophy is lucky to sit right in the middle of it. From the moment you walk in the doors, you are greeted with our double fireplace wall, great playlist, friendly staff and a vibe that will keep you coming back for more.
