An 81-year-old Ohio man was charged with murder after allegedly shooting and killing an Uber driver who thought she was picking up a package from the man’s house. According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, both were victims of scam phone calls.

Investigators say William Brock received a phone call about an incarcerated relative, in which they threatened him and demanded money. The unknown caller told Brock he needed to pay $12,000 to get his nephew out of jail, and if he didn’t pay, he would kill him.

The same caller hired 61-year-old Loletha Hall using Uber so she could pick up a package from Brock’s home. Hall was not aware of the phone call that Brock had prior and that he had been threatened.

Brock allegedly held Hall at gunpoint when she arrived and asked to know the identities of the people who called him. He then took Hall’s phone and refused to let her leave. When Hall tried to get back into her vehicle, Brock allegedly shot her, which was followed by a scuffle near her car after she was wounded. Brock then shot her two more times and called 911.

Hall was taken to the hospital where she died of her injuries. Brock had an injury to his head and ear and was bleeding when police arrived.

Brock was charged with murder which carries a penalty of 15 years to life in prison, and police are considering other charges as well. There is still a search ongoing for the scam callers.
