Band director Cedric Young sees a valuable lesson in playing an instrument

Cedric Young has been a band director for 36 years and continues to learn new things every day

Cedric Young’s background was steeped in music from an early age, given his father’s role as a band director. With experiences at Alabama State University and Clark Atlanta University, both Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Young honed his skills as a band director, shaping the lives of students along the way. Now, with 36 years of experience, he serves as the director at Westlake High School.

Young spoke with rolling out about his career as a band director, his tenure at Westlake, and the invaluable lessons passed down from his father.

What did your father teach you about being a band director?

My dad made being a band director look effortless. He conducted rehearsals daily, and his bands performed at football games, concerts, and community events. It seemed simple. In my 36 years of teaching, I’ve realized there’s always more to learn in any craft. Being a band director isn’t just about teaching music; it’s about connecting with students on a deeper level to draw out their fullest potential as musicians.

Over the years, I’ve come to understand what my dad knew instinctively. He fostered a sense of community within his band program, not just focused on the music itself. As a former trumpet player in his band, I didn’t fully grasp this. Now, as a band director myself, I see the broader picture.

How does playing in the band prepare students for life?

Participating in the band instills essential life skills. Students learn punctuality, proper attire for rehearsals, effective communication, cooperation, and patience. Mastery takes time; it’s not instantaneous. Whether preparing for a performance or mastering new music, it requires dedication and often extends beyond one’s comfort zone. Our students learn the value of solitude and the importance of goal setting. They understand the necessity of maintaining enthusiasm and professionalism, even when repetition may make tasks seem mundane.

Our band program teaches more than music; it imparts life skills. Music serves as the medium through which we teach these valuable lessons.
