Tequila Smith is no stranger to transformation. As Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer at Reworld, she’s helping reshape how we think about waste—not as a problem, but as a powerful opportunity. In honor of Earth Day, we caught up with this dynamic leader to talk sustainability, responsibility, and how our communities can play a central role in protecting the planet.
What does Earth Month mean to you personally and professionally?
Tequila Smith: Earth Month is a chance to press pause and ask: What kind of world are we building for the next generation? For me, it’s deeply personal. I grew with an understanding that many of our communities didn’t always have access to the cleanest air, water, or green spaces. That shaped how I see the work we do at Reworld—not just as environmental, but as essential to justice and equity. Earth Month is a reminder that sustainability is about the science and it’s about people.
Talk to us about Reworld’s mission and what sets it apart.
TS: At Reworld, we’re changing the game in waste management. We turn everyday waste into energy, help companies go zero-waste, and design systems that keep resources in use and out of landfills. We’re not in the business of doing things the way they’ve always been done. We’re about innovation—with the planet and people at the center. Our approach is holistic, and our goal is bold: a future where we waste better, smarter and less.
What’s a project that really speaks to that mission?
TS: I am especially proud of our work with schools and local governments to bring sustainable solutions directly into communities. My community engagement team is building strong connections where we operate. We’re helping cities reduce landfill use and introducing energy alternatives that cut emissions and create jobs. But beyond the tech, it’s the storytelling—the education piece—that excites me. When young people understand they have the power to drive change, that’s when transformation really happens.
What can our RO community do this Earth Month to make a difference?
TS: Don’t underestimate the power of everyday decisions. Recycling correctly, reducing waste, supporting small businesses and sustainable brands—those choices matter. But also: use your voice. Advocate for clean energy in your city. Ask companies what they’re doing to protect the planet. Sustainability isn’t just a corporate responsibility—it’s a community movement.
What drives you as a leader in this space?
TS: Purpose. I believe we’re all here to leave something better behind. As a leader in sustainability, I also believe representation matters. Our communities deserve to be at the forefront of environmental conversations—not just affected by them. I want young people to see this work and know they belong in it.
Final message for Earth Day?
TS: Earth Day isn’t just about nature—it’s about nurturing each other. Let’s take care of our neighborhoods the same way we take care of our families. The planet is home, and protecting it is an act of love.
