Big Sean on Detroit, dating Naya Rivera and dealing with Kendrick Lamar

While the troubles in Detroit are never far from Sean’s mind or his art, it’s undeniable that his personal life has been on the upswing lately. The hip-hop star began a serious relationship with actress Naya Rivera this year, and the two have become one of the blogosphere’s favorite young celebrity couples. Sean has spoken about past loves before, but he admits that having a lady who’s as high-profile as he is a bit of a new experience.

“I never dated a girl who was popular,” he admits, before adding, “I don’t think about it. I never look at it like I have a popular girlfriend; I look at it like I have a girlfriend. At the end of the day, I’m her boyfriend. It’s never Hollywood-type stuff. I don’t treat her any different because of who she is, she don’t treat me any different because of who I am. We just treat each other like you should be treated when you’re in a relationship and you love somebody. It’s awesome, man. She respects me. No matter how busy she is, she always makes time to be a girlfriend and no matter how busy I am, I try to be a good boyfriend. She’ll cook and all sorts of nice things, even though I tell her not to. And I return it and do the same thing. It’s a cool thing. [There’s] definitely a difference, but it’s been awhile since I’ve been this happy in a relationship.”

Sean admits that he’s indulged in the kind of activities one would expect a young rapper to enjoy when he’s made his first strides toward superstardom; but he says that nothing beats what he’s found with the “Glee” actress.

“That don’t even mean nothing no [sic] more,” he says regarding groupies. “It’s cool — but it ain’t nothing [sic] there, really. When you get past the surface, there’s nothing there. When you’ve got something real, you should hold on to it. That’s deeper than just a pretty face.” He pauses, before adding with a grin, “I can’t even believe I’m saying some s— like that!”
