Police are investigating rapper Fetty Wap after a 19-year-old ShopRite clerk claims he was assaulted by the rising star and his entourage.
According to authorities, Fetty Wap, whose hit song “Trap Queen” rose to the top of the charts this spring, may have been part of a group that attacked the man while he was working in the checkout line Friday evening.
The incident started after a woman slapped the employee because she felt she had been insulted by the clerk. The feud escalated when three men jumped to her defense, attacking him further. The unnamed victim suffered minor swelling on his face but no severe injuries were discovered.
Police believe one of the people in the group consisting of two men and two women was the 25-year-old rapper, whose real name is Willie Maxwell II. Although the employee declined to press charges, he was informed that he could do so at a later date.
Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said detectives were working to establish the identities of those in the group to learn their side of the story and in the event that the employee changes his mind about filing a complaint. TMZ obtained surveillance footage from ShopRite; however, it is unclear if Wap has been identified. “Maybe it looks like him,” the chief said. “We can’t go by, ‘Uh, it looks like him.’ We need more evidence than that.”
A publicist for Fetty Wap could not immediately be reached for comment.
