Jason Collins has become the most dominant conversation subject in America after a Sports Illustrated magazine feature revealed that Collins is the first athlete of any major pro sports to come out as openly gay.The overwhelming sentiment has been positive with everyone from the Kennedys to the Clintons to the White House offering up praise and support. First lady Michelle Obama pledged her support, as did NBA Commissioner David Stern. Bill Clinton said he was “proud” to call Collins a friend, while Rep. Joe Kennedy called him a longtime brother-like figure in his life.
But not everyone is on Collins’ side, including those inside the world of sports — as well as the NBA.
Miami Dolphin’s wide receiver Mike Wallace tweeted, then quickly deleted, “All these beautiful women in the world and guys wanna mess with other guys SMH.” He later tweeted an apology after he was blasted for his remarks by a legion of Collins supporters:
