Although Wyclef Jean was shot in the hand last week while on a political trip to Haiti, the musician and activist is claiming that he’s just happy that his shooting brought attention to Haiti’s presidential election.
“It brought light to the fact that there was an election going on that day,” Jean told people.com on Saturday while at HAZE nightclub in Las Vegas. “I don’t think none of you all knew about an election in Haiti until everyone heard what happened to me.”
Jean had hoped to be on the ballot, having been a candidate for the presidency last year before being disqualified due to his residency status.
While the Haiti native readily opens up about his wounded hand, which he’s now calling “the most famous hand in history,” Jean only halfway hints at what he believes to be the reasons for the shooting and the political drama of the election.
“It was definitely a graze,” he said. “The bullet didn’t go in or anything,” said Jean. “There’s a lot to the story … The story is about the fact that we had an election and our party is in the lead. It’s a young party, trying to take over the country.”
