Ronald Fleming's MBA Became His (Free) Ticket to Traveling the World

Detroit native Ronald Fleming was serving as a commander in the Detroit Police Department when he decided to take advantage of a program designed to encourage law enforcement officers to pursue higher education. “I earned my master’s degree in criminal justice from Atlanta University,” says Fleming, “And when I was called back to the force to train bodyguards, I was made Assistant Chief of Police. That never would have happened if I did not have my graduate degree.”

Fleming credits his decision to pursue higher education with making him ready and able to handle the many opportunities he came across in his career in law enforcement, including a position as a bodyguard for the music legend, Michael Jackson.

“I fell into executive protection,” Fleming says of his current career. “I’m very fortunate because seeing the world is provided for me by different clients. I’ve been to Africa eight times. I’ve been to Asia four times. I’ve been to Europe six or seven times and I don’t pay for it. Somebody else pays my way.”

“I’m currently touring with Ms. Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul,” reveals Fleming. “All my life I’ve listened to her music and it is such an honor to travel with her, but more importantly to secure her. I’ve been very fortunate.”

Regarding his decision to pursue his MBA, Fleming says it definitely boosted his career beyond his wildest dreams. “I encourage everyone to make the sacrifice and get your education. You never know what it will do for you. It will put you in a position so that when the opportunity arises, you will have what you need to propel you to the next level.”
