Thanks to the hit movie, The Social Network, 2010, was the year of Facebook, and because of Steve Jobs, this year belonged to Apple.
On October 4, Apple released its iPhone 4S.
On October 5, Apple chairman and co-founder Steve Jobs, succumbed to pancreatic cancer. The tech revolutionary’s death made headlines around the world, and scores of savvy black entrepreneurs raced to comprehend and implement Jobs’ legendary business acumen.
Apple made headlines again when CNNMoney exposed that the company, along with Google, and Yahoo, refused to reveal the diversity of their staffs. The tech behemoths argued the release of diversity data (already made available to Class of 2011: Year in Reviewthe government) would expose trade secrets.
In the telecommunications arena, flustered BlackBerry users struggled with a nationwide blackout, as Apple iPhone 4S users discovered Siri, a “personal assistant” software feature that allows users to send messages and search the Web by voice command.
AT&T and T-Mobile’s $39 billion merger proposal went bust after the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission cried foul, but that disappointment paled in comparison to what befell Sony after hackers breached the personal and financial data that belonged to 77 million PlayStation gamers.
