Roberts Has Blood Disorder

A famed “Good Morning America” host has announced a new health challenge she’s undergoing just years after beating breast cancer. Robin Roberts, 51, announced on June 11 that she’s suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome, a blood disorder triggered by her previous cancer treatments. The syndrome is described as a rare malignant disorder of the bone marrow that usually strikes the elderly. A medical correspondent noted, however, that is has been linked to cancer treatments.

“You have heard me say I am abundantly blessed,” said Roberts during her announcement. “The reason I say that I am blessed is that my big sister is a virtually perfect match and she is going to be my donor.”

Roberts is expected to continue to host the morning program but will be absent for several months during her recovery.

Since her announcement, Roberts has received a rush of support, most notably from Michelle Obama who tweeted, “Barack and I have you in our prayers. We believe in you and thank you for bringing awareness and hope to others. –mo”
