Let’s rewind to 2009, and the incident that led to their public breakup.
The photo of Rihanna’s battered face launched a million gasps as the details emerged of what Rihanna’s then-boyfriend Chris Brown had done. Their world was changed forever; Chris Brown was a woman-beater, Rihanna was a victim, and as far as fans and talking heads were concerned, the two should never meet up again.
But now they are back together and many folks are scratching their heads, and in the revealing Oprah interview, Rihanna appeared to be scratching her head as well.
“It was a weird, confusing space to be in,” Rihanna told Oprah when describing how she lost her lover and best friend on that fateful night.
“As angry as I was … as angry and hurt and betrayed, I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help. And like who’s gonna help him? Nobody is gonna say he needs help. Everybody’s gonna say he’s a monster without looking at the source.”
“And I was more concerned about him.”
Lost in her own emotions, Rihanna added: “I lost my best friend … everything I knew switched in a night.”
