Alongside male counterparts like Beck and the Beastie Boys, this NYC-based quartet exemplified the genre-blending, sample-heavy sound that defined alternative music in the mid-90s. Though they were signed to the Beastie’s Grand Royal label, they experienced less chart success–aside from  the crossover hit “Naked Eye.” Nonetheless, they were wildly influential on later artists like Bat For Lashes and Imani Coppola.
