It’s Academy Award season, and as most cinephiles will spend Oscar night debating about who was best dressed, which actors deserved their awards and which films were snubbed, the musical side of the film industry’s biggest night sometimes gets less scrutiny.


The songs that fuel the movies can be as much a part of the cinematic experience as the riveting performances of the actors, and the methods in which directors utilize those songs are often evidence of their genius as filmmakers. But for every “Chariots of Fire” or “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp” (yes, never forget that Oscar moment), there are several other classic movie songs that didn’t even garner a nomination.


Some songs come and go, but there are others that were such huge hits, or so inextricably tied to the acclaimed movies in which they were featured, that it boggles the mind that the Academy Awards failed to acknowledge their greatness.

So, in the spirit of the movie industry’s biggest night, we decided to list ten great songs from films (of varying quality) that should’ve at least gotten a nod.
