Hollywood stars, civic leaders shine at Morehouse's Candle in the Dark Gala
Valerie Ervin, president of the Ray Charles Foundation presents President John Silvanus Wilson Jr. ’79 a check for $3 million during the 25th annual A Candle in the Dark Gala. Holding the check are two Morehouse students, President Wilson (left), Ms. Ervin (center) and Chairman of the Morehouse Board of Trustees Robert C. Davidson ’67 (second from right).

Dr. King’s candle glows and his memorial in Washington, D.C., serves as a beacon of light he so famously referenced in his “I Have a Dream Speech” at the Lincoln Memorial on Aug, 28, 1963. It reads in part:

“This momentous decree [Emancipation Proclamation] came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.”

The evening was filled with pleasant surprises.

Continuing a legacy of giving, The Ray Charles Foundation bestowed a gift of $3 million in honor of the late singer’s mother, Aretha Robinson. Oprah Winfrey has been a consistent contributor to Morehouse College, totaling $12 million, making her the top donor to date.
