The Art Institute of Chicago introduced “They Seek a City: Chicago and The Art of Migration, 1910-1950,” at its opening gala on Saturday, March 2nd. The gala celebration brought out Chicago’s finest including Governor Pat Quinn, ComEd CEO Anne Pramaggiore, Dr. Walter Massey with his wife, and was MCd by ABC Channel 7’s Leah Hope. The Exelon Foundation was a major lead sponsor for this phenomenal event. The event’s atmosphere bridged cultural appreciation and artistic preservation. Dancers staged themselves throughout the entire museum showcasing dances such as the Charleston and other dance moves that were being done during time span covering the early years of the exhibit.
The cocktail reception allowed the entire community to commune and converse about their favorite artists who were being showcased including Archibald J. Motley, Jr., Walter Ellison, Elizabeth Catlett and others. Many of the community’s powerbrokers came out to support this wonderful occasion including Macy’s Ralph Hughes and his wife, Sandra Rand, Judge Stanley L. Hill, Dr. And Mrs. Walter Massey and several others. The event included a wonderful celebration with delectable food and a peek at the exhibit that will change how we perceive Chicago connecting the past with the present.
It is important to note that the entire event at the Art Institute of Chicago brought together the ideals of diversity and cultural appreciation. The Leadership Advisory Committee of the Chicago Art Institute has continued to devise ways to elevate the cultural appreciation of art and bridge the community conversation of inclusion.
