Acclaimed filmmaker Lee Daniels is known for creating moving stories for unconventional characters like with his hit films Monsters Ball and Precious. And now, after striking gold again at the Box Office with The Butler, Daniels is now setting his sights on an action adventure film with two gay men as its stars.
In a recent interview with Out, Daniels explains that he wants to create an “interracial love affair action movie” starring a gay couple. Daniels further described the film as a gay “Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but the two good-looking guys as the action heroes.”
And according to Daniels, the interracial gay love story isn’t even the biggest shocker. The big twist will be that “We don’t find out they’re gay until the end of the movie.”
The film is already in development and as far as casting goes, Daniels has already tapped his latest acting muse, Alex Pettyfer, who played an angry, gun-toting slave master in The Butler, as one-half of the interracial gay couple.
“Alex Pettyfer is in it, [but] I have to find the right black guy opposite him. He’s so hot, isn’t he? So hot. And so aware of his hotness in a way that’s so…I love him to death.”
The concept may seem a bit too radical for Hollywood, Daniels says that he has no concerns about getting funding for the project.
“I don’t think I’m going to have a problem now. I made a $100 million for The Butler. I’m in a rare group. So this is something I feel good about,” he said.
