Mixtape Mondays: Eminem ‘My Name Is …’

emainem

At his best, Eminem is considered one of the best emcees ever and a joy to listen to for any lyrics-driven fan. At his worst, he is still better than 80 percent of most emcees today, but it’s hard to listen to bad Eminem when you know what good Eminem sounds like.

And herein lies the problem with this mixtape, My Name Is …, which is comprised of unreleased freestyles and songs made throughout the course of Eminem’s career, you’ll get both good and bad Eminem repeatedly.

Take the first two tracks, for instance. The set leads off with the throwaway track “Fly Away,” which sounds like it isn’t finished being mixed, but more importantly features Em’s patented melancholy sing-songy hook that most of his die-hard fans have come to loathe. Then you have the next track “Can’t Stand You,” featuring Em’s late best friend and D-12 rapper, Proof. More or less a freestyle between the two friends, it serves as a reminder of the good Eminem when he was young, hungry, carefree and just focused on rapping for the sake of rapping.

The lack of cohesiveness also plays a part in the unevenness of this particular mixtape, but if you’re willing to shuffle throw the bad songs, you’ll inevitable find a few gems that you may have missed over the years.

Standout tracks include “Can’t Stand You,” “Scary Movie” featuring Royce Da 5’9″ and “Weed Lacer (Freestyle).”
