Angel Haze spoke to The Independent about her relationship with actor Alec Baldwin’s daughter, Ireland. According to Haze, the relationship is romantic, but American media outlets aren’t comfortable with the couple so they portray their bond as simply friendship.
“Everyone just calls us best friends, best friends for life, like we’re just friends hanging out,” Haze says. “It’s funny. It’s rad in some ways. It sucks in others … There are still certain limitations for women. If we were two guys, it’d be insane, negatively insane with the attention. With us, it’s all being very positive, the media are like, ‘Oh they’re so cute, they’re best friends.'”
Haze added that American popular culture is still leery of an interracial lesbian couple.
“An interracial gay couple, I mean that’s just weird for America right now,” she adds. “We f— and friends don’t f—. I have never f—— one of my friends. Once I see you in that way, it doesn’t happen … But we do f— and it’s crazy and that’s weird to say because I think about it in terms of an audience reading it and them thinking, ‘What the hell?’ But it happens.”
Haze’s words apparently didn’t sit well with Baldwin, who went on a tirade via Twitter about gossip sites twisting Haze’s words.
“These gossip sites and articles need to relax,” she tweeted. “They twist words to make their lame publications more exciting. Making this about race or the fact that we’re both women is rather outdated. This is a new world we live in.”
“Our private life should be respected as well. A lot of claims have been recently posted that were never said. Reporters like to take our words, alter them to their benefit and run. It’s not cool. We’re happy. We’re healthy. That’s all that matters.”
