Mixtape Mondays: Malik Yusef’s ‘G.O.O.D Morning, G.O.O.D Night: Deconstructed’

GMGND

When you’re an artist and you have the time and means like legendary Chicago wordsmith Malik Yusef, sometimes you just want to go back and revisit your previous work.

This collection titled G.O.O.D Morning, G.O.O.D. Night: Deconstructed is an example. As the title suggests, it’s basically a reworking of his 2009 album, G.O.O.D. Morning, G.O.O.D. Night. And nothing’s wrong with that because sometimes you want to tinker and remix things.

Yusef didn’t stray too far from the winning formula: his dazzling words paired with soulful and enticing beats and an occasional guest star. This go-round, Kanye West, John Legend, Common, Big Sean, Maroon 5′s Adam Levine, KRS-One, Twista and CyHi The Prince all stop by to lend their well-known talents. But Yusef and producer D. Cro$$ also made sure to invite some up-and-comers too, such as Nikki Hayes, Loren Riche, Atlas and more to the party.

There’s no attempt to reinvent the wheel here. Just an artist who wanted to take a previous work and do something different with it. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Standout tracks include “Magic Man” featuring Kanye West and Common. “Sticks and Stone” featuring Big Sean and Cyhi The Prince, and “That’s Not Love” featuring Nikki Smith.

Rating: 3.5
