If ever there was a musical formula that you can always count on, it would be the marriage of R&B vocals over hip-hop beats.
On her latest offering, The Notorious J.A.Y., Brooklyn singer Jay Elle utilizes that marriage, but takes it a step further by paying homage to fellow Brooklynite Notorious B.I.G., by singing over some of his most popular songs. In fact, the 10-track collection features five songs over Biggie beats that will instantly send any fan of the late great emcee into sweet nostalgia.
Though this mixtape doesn’t break any new ground as far as topics (Love, Loss, Sex, and Regret are all common themes), it remains another solid effort under Jay Elle’s belt as she continues to make a name for herself in the landscape of contemporary R&B.
Standout tracks include “Time And Time Again,” “Sexting,” and the Xscape remake of the sultry “Tonight.”
