A woman in Paterson, New Jersey, gave birth to twins, but she was unsure of who fathered the children. According to a report by the Associated Press, the woman gave birth to twin daughters in January 2013.

She believed that one man was the father of her children and took him to court for child support payments. Passaic County Superior Court Judge Sohail Mohammed ordered a DNA test. Once the results returned, it was determined that the defendant was only the father of one of the girls. The other girl was fathered by another man.

Although it’s rare, women can give birth to twins that are fathered by two different men. It occurs when a woman produces two eggs instead of one and has sex with two different men. There is a chance that each egg can be fertilized by a different man.

The mother of the twins admitted to having unprotected sex with two men in a span of a week. As a result, both men became fathers to her daughters.

The judge ordered the defendant to pay $28 per week of child support for his daughter.
