The Kappa Detroit Foundation definitely knows how to party with a purpose. The organization recently raised funds for grants and scholarships at Diamond Life, a J5 founders’ day celebration commemorating 105 years of honorable achievement. Held in the Grand Ballroom at the Downtown Doubletree-Hilton hotel, the event raised over $2,000. Several of Detroit’s finest, including fellow Greeks, showed up to support the philanthropic event.
As the Kappa’s own Notorious DJ Snake kept the crowd moving, guests mingled and enjoyed cocktails. The dimly lit ballroom and outer reception area created a relaxed atmosphere with a mature vibe.
The Kappa Detroit Foundation’s main objective is to develop and implement charitable programs on behalf of the Detroit Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. In addition, the foundation provides young people with academically oriented services such as tutoring, leadership training, and career exposure. The foundation also assists various community-based and social service organizations by providing homes for the elderly, and physical redevelopment of housing.
The Kappa Detroit Foundation has been providing grants and scholarships for almost 40 years; the awards range between $250.00-$1,000. Some of the signature events that support the scholarship fund are the Ford Field concessions, the Kappa Golf Outing, the Black and White Ball, and the upcoming Women of Distinction Awards luncheon. In the past seven years, the organization has distributed over $76,000 to deserving students and community groups in metro Detroit; applications are being accepted now through February, 29, 2016.
