Held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California, the event was hosted by Anthony Anderson and featured high-profile celebrities such as Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Taraji P. Henson, Michael B. Jordan and Kerry Washington.

Some of the notable winners included, Jordan (Entertainer of the Year and Outstanding actor of the Year); Taraji P. Henson (Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series); Tracee Ellis Ross (Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series); and Sanaa Lathan (Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture).
