Idris Elba fulfilled his dream as a DJ.
The “Turn Up Charlie” star was supported by his fiancée Sabrina Dhowre and his daughter Isan, 17, as he took the stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Saturday night, April 13, 2019.
Elba wore a pair of sunglasses and a bold print shirt as he took to the decks in front of revelers at the annual music event. He also had a bandana tied around his neck, to fit in with the festival’s vibes. He remixed a number of popular songs in his set including Deborah Cox’s “Just Be Good to Me” and “This Is America” by Childish Gambino, who headlined Friday night.
Before taking to the stage, Elba posted his excitement on Instagram, writing: “You ready @coachella ?????? I am!!!!! Game face … let’s get it.”
With celebrity fan Liam Payne commenting: “Bro can’t wait to see you.”
Meanwhile, Elba — who is best known for his film and TV work — is proud that he’s been invited to perform at Coachella on the strength of his deejaying prowess.
He told Billboard: “As an actor, it hit the news that I’m playing Coachella, but I’m sure most people don’t know what I play: deep, techy house. I’m just excited to have been invited to one of the world’s best and largest music festivals. It’s a real nod to the work I’ve done as a DJ. … [Making music] is one of those things that keeps me grounded. I’m not a multiplatinum artist. I don’t necessarily do it for the financial benefits. I do it because I love it. I can make music on my phone, anytime, instantly. Making a film takes a long time — an average of 24 months between selling an idea and getting it onto the screen. I could make a tune today, put it on the internet by Friday and in two weeks it could be sitting on the charts. That’s amazing. It’s a different experience altogether.”
