Janelle Monáe and Marsai Martin have a special connection they are are just finding out about.

Both stars are native to a small town in Kansas City, Kansas. After Martin’s family told her they were related, she was anxious to meet the Hidden Figures star. Martin and Monáe formally introduced themselves during a 2019 Golden Globes after-party. Martin, who was attending with her mother, went through a who’s who of family members and found the common connection. Monáe calls them “cousins on cousins on cousins.” The duo made the revelation during an interview with InStyle.

Monáe currently stars as the voice of Mandy in the animated film Ugly Dolls. Set in the town of Uglyville, the residents celebrate weirdness and strangeness.  Martin is gearing up for another season of the hit ABC show “Black-Ish” and recently turned 15.

No plans are in place for Monáe and Martin to work together on a project but the newly minted cousins likely have their wheels turning. Martin recently starred and made history as the world’s youngest executive producer for the Universal Pictures film Little. Monáe’s song, “I Got the Juice” appears in the film.

Monáe is set to headline the second season of Amazon’s psychological thriller “Homecoming.” She replaces Julia Roberts who will continue as the show’s executive producer. Monáe’s character will reportedly awaken in a canoe with no knowledge of how she arrived there.

The series is keeping Monáe’s character under wraps until the series premiere. “Black-ish” returns to ABC in September.
