Movie mogul Tyler Perry has rarely given insight into his personal life of late, despite being very open about what happened during his childhood and how it impacted him.
During the latest episode of “The Real,” the Madea mastermind revealed he broke down when he had to get stern with his 5-year-old son, Aman, after he displayed bad behavior.
“I will tell you this one moment that was really hard for me. I had to discipline [Aman],” Perry began. “He was really rude to the nanny and he was in the bathroom arguing with her … I get down to his level and I’m talking to him and I said, ‘Listen, what are you doing? You don’t do this. This is unacceptable. You’re not going to disrespect her. You’re not going to disrespect your mom. You’re going to do what they say to do.'”
Perry said the lecture caused Aman to begin crying, which, in turn, produced tears in Perry.
“And he’s just crying and he goes, ‘Yes, papa. Yes,'” he continued. “But as he’s crying and I’m down on his level, I’m trying to hold back my tears. I get up and I leave out of the room and he says, ‘Are you OK?’ ”
Perry added that the episode gave him flashbacks to his own childhood because no one talked to him like a person as he did with his son.
“No one talked to me like that when I was a 5-year-old,” he said. “No one had a conversation with me. No one talked to me like a person. So here I am having an opportunity to heal my ‘little boy self’ by talking to my son like a person.”
