Photographer Rosella Joseph explains how art saved her life

Who do you consider to be great photographers?

Deana Lawson and Carrie Mae Weems.

How do they inspire you?

They are amazing Black women photographers who don’t think they get as much recognition as they should. They ought to be placed right along with Annie Leibovitz. Deana Lawson shoots in a documentary style and shoots Black people beautifully. Even though you’ve probably never heard of her, you’ve probably seen her work. Deana Lawson shot Rihanna’s Garage Magazine cover and Teyana Taylor’s album cover. She along with Carrie Mae showed me that there was more to photography than shooting pretty and polished pictures. You can use photography to express yourself as an individual and to tell stories.

What advice would you have for aspiring photographers?

When I first started photography, I wanted my work to look more editorial or the “polished magazine look.” At some point, you just need to stop caring and shoot who and what you want and not feel pressured to shoot in a certain way. Really try to develop your own style, and stop worrying about what other people are doing.
