Black, Gifted & Whole supporting HBCU students through school and pandemic

Tell us about The Black Box.

When COVID hit, everybody was displaced and colleges were saying, “You can’t come to our campus. You have to talk to us remotely.” But we forget that a lot of students don’t have homes to go to. So, I reached out to about six or seven of my Black queer friends that own organizations and companies, and I got merchandise from them. I said, “What we can do is create a black box, like a care package.” I sent that out to 60 students. Whoever came and applied on our website, that’s who got a box. It wasn’t about, “Oh, let us go through the names, and what’s your GPA?” My thing is right now we need support. We sent out reading materials, condoms, lube. We sent vodka to the 21 and up. Transwomen got boxes. Heterosexual women got boxes. We didn’t give a f— who applied and who needed the care package. We sent them all [one].
