Celebrities such as Rihanna, Lil’ Kim and Nicki Minaj are rumored to have lightened their skin. We all saw the effects of skin lighting on Michael Jackson and MLB player Sammy Sosa.
In 2018, Blac Chyna partnered to promote a skin-lightening product, Whitenicious, that was launched in Nigeria. After social media backlash, the product is now marketed as a brightening cream costing a mere $250 for a 3.5-ounce jar.
According to the World Health Organization, there are long-term risks associated with using these products because they contain mercury. Health concerns include possible liver damage, a reduction in resistance to bacterial and fungal infections as well as mental health implications. To make matters worst, these progressive changes aren’t permanent. Researchers predict that by 2027, the skin-whitening industry will be worth more than $24 million.
While skin-lightening methods range from cosmetic surgery to pills, creams and injections, the question that should be asked remains is one’s beauty solely based on their skin color?
Remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
