How important is it for Black writers to tell their stories?
It’s important for us to reclaim the narrative and thankfully it’s happening everywhere. In film, television in my world on stage but most importantly, I think, in literature. The written word endures, it is something we can refer back to again and again for generations. When we write our history and our stories, not only do we correct the record of our past, we define our future.
Do you think you write another book?
I am actually almost done with my second book. It’s about two best friends, one Black and one White, navigating the social justice movement in our country now, and realizing how different the world is for each of them.
What advice can you offer to others who desire to write?
Be fearless. And know why you want to write the book. If you know why you want to write it, then it will remain your motivator.
