In 1962, Malcolm X famously said the Black woman is the most disrespected demographic in America. That statement can be backed by the nation’s deep-rooted racism and sexism. According to a 2018 study done by American progress, Black women get paid 62 cents to the average White American man.
While social media users can show virtual support for Rico Nasty, the best chance for Carti fans to end the egregious disrespect of Nasty or any Black woman at his shows, is for him to physically and verbally protect Black women himself and say something at his next show.
Yes, even a man whose rap name starts with Playboi on a tour where he calls himself a narcissist.
While Carti has built a mysterious public persona by barely tweeting beyond vague code, it’s time for him to step out of his comfort zone and straight up tell his young White male fans to respect another human being. It goes to the most simple of concepts, and the fact that this opinion even has to be written and directed towards a 25-year-old Black man. It also speaks to how much progress Black men have made in the goal of protecting Black women.
If disrespect isn’t checked at the most basic level, how can the switch be flipped when it comes to the more serious issues surrounding Black women?
