‘It’s not over yet’: Trae Young responds to claim he saved Black man from death

“I know it’s a win, he’s still living to see another day, but imagine not being able to hug your family for 20 years straight,” Young, who sat courtside with his father and little brother at the College Park Skyhawks, the Hawks’ G-League affiliate, home game on Nov. 19, said. “You get announced you’re not going to be executed and you still can’t hug them or see them or touch them. Part of me feels good. I mean, [it’s] great that he wasn’t executed, but at the same time, I’m a family person. Not being able to hug my family or see my family for 20 years, and if you look at the [case], it’s a crazy story. For me, it’s a good feeling, but I don’t think it’s over yet.”

Young has remained outspoken about Jones’ status, as he tweeted a graphic that reads how a White governor sentenced Jones to life in prison after the state board recommended a commuted sentence due to the high probability he didn’t commit the murder. The other side of the graphic shows Kyle Rittenhouse, the White teenager found not guilty on all counts after carrying an assault rifle through a protest against police brutality as he shot and killed two people on video.

Through his first 17 games of the season, Young is averaging 24.7 points, 9.2 assists and 3.5 rebounds.
