ACLU of Georgia policy director talks about convictions in Arbery case

One of the things that worries me the most is the lack of investigation by the police officers — not just [not] arresting [the McMichaels or Bryan], but ignoring the brother, not really thinking about CPR, not really thinking about here’s a young man shot. I’m wondering why the lens of America doesn’t want to tell the full story on this simple issue of why the police ignored the victim’s rights?

We’re talking about the process of the police who you’re saying are [involved in a] cover-up? Yes, co-conspirators in a murder investigation. … This is why people say there’s institutional racism within this country because the institution, those people in Glynn County pay taxes toward those police officers’ salaries to protect them, and the only thing they did was cover up a murder and you have not one police officer, not one, being held accountable, fired, suspended. Nothing. And that is the problem.

What do you think should be a part of police reform?

Right, it’s a great question. We could always start off with accountability. We should always go ahead and say police are not immune. They’re not above the law.

Transparency. Oh, there’s a lot of times with police officers, we don’t know what they do. On a daily basis, we don’t know how many citations that they receive for not showing up on time.

Really, there need to be more Black police officers. There need to be more Black people who are holding the uniform of blue.
