What should readers and audiences expect from the book?
The readers should expect relatability. The main character just happens to be plus-sized, but it’s much more than the title suggests. It’s about relationships, career, passion and purpose, insecurities, and choosing yourself at times. It’s a myriad of things that most people, especially women, have experienced, are experiencing or will experience at some point in their lives.
What did you like best about writing this book?
The best thing about writing this book is that I got to tell my story the way I wanted to tell it. Due to the pandemic, I was furloughed from my job for ten months and it gave me the time to write and start my own publishing company. I learned so much during that time, and with all that was going on in 2020, the book went in a different direction. I wanted to give back to my community by giving love to some Black-owned businesses rather than using fictitious names.
Do you have a specific writing style?
I’ve been writing in the first person so far because I like having the characters narrate their own story, but I won’t limit myself. We’ll see what happens with my next projects.
How important is it for Black writers and readers to have their stories told?
It is imperative for Black writers and readers to be able to have our stories told because at one time, antiliteracy laws prevented us from being allowed to read and write. Our ancestors could probably never dream of a time when we could not only read but be brilliant writers as well. We had to take Black history class as an elective for years because it wasn’t seen as a necessity. Our history is so rich, and we are such a diverse group of individuals; from our skin color to our hair texture, to the way we speak and dress. We deserve to have our stories told.
