Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo is steady building a formidable film resume and his next project will only add to the wide range of roles he’s undertaken.
Sing Sing tells the story of the New York Sing Sing Correctional Facility’s Rehabilitation Through the Arts program that gave inmates an outlet to create their own stage productions.
Domingo stars as John “Divine G” Whitfeld alongside a cast of actual former members of the program including Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin, who portrays himself, as the group comes together to put on their own original production called “Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code”. Based on a 2005 Esquire article by John H. Richardson entitled “The Sing Sing Follies”, the play was performed in 2005 and was written by program theater director Brent Buell.
“It’s been a program that was established to help people get more in touch with their feelings and truly get some rehabilitation,” Domingo says in the trailer. “And it’s turned into something, I don’t know, wonderful.”
The Rustin star said the working with cast called for a certain level of openness and honesty and it was “the most open and raw that I’ve ever been. You can’t lie. You can’t lie with these guys.”
First premiering a the Toronto Film Festival this past September and recently at the SXSW Film Fest, Sing Sing is set to come to theaters in early July.
