Anna Hayes decided to attend her high school prom with a friend who she thought was cute and made her laugh. The fact that her friend was Black became an issue with her White father.
Hayes, who lives with her mother in Lake Village, Arkansas, posted prom pictures with her date on social media. Although she received well wishes from most of her family and friends, she received verbal abuse from her father.
After seeing the picture, Hayes’ father sent her several text messages to voice his displeasure with her decision to date a Black student. “We are done,” her father sent in text message. “I won’t be coming to your graduation, nor will I pay for your college. Go live with the n—-rs.”
Hayes’ responded by saying, “I went to prom with a Black guy so that’s a problem. Racist much.”
“Yes, I am. Your [sic] dead to me,” her father replied. “Don’t ever contact me again we are through. Go ahed be a f—n whore leave me out of it.”
Her father continued on his racist rant by texting, “Go live with the f—-n n—rs. You want to mingle with subhumans, I’ll treat you accordingly.”
Hayes said that she was extremely sad by her father’s actions and sent a screenshot of the the text messages to her date, Freeman. Freeman shared the screenshot online and it has since gone viral.
Hayes’ father is another example of why America continues to suffer from its original sin, racism. It has always divided this country from the political arena all the way down to education. Something as simple as a high school prom picture can prove why America has never truly moved forward when it comes to race.
