Mona Scott-Young explains $50 million ‘Love & Hip Hop’ lawsuit
Mona Scott-Young is dishing on a $50 million lawsuit that she’s facing over her “Love & Hip Hop” franchises. As previously reported, the reality TV mogul along with VH1, MTV Networks, Jeff Olde, Viacom and a number of others, are being sued by 8th Wonder Entertainment, who claims the group stole their reality TV show idea.
8th Wonder claims that it was pitching a programtitleded “Hip Hop Wives” that would’ve included DMX’s ex-wife, Tashera Simmons; Jim Jones’ fiancée, Chrissy Lampkin; Swizz Beatz’s ex-wife, Mashonda Tifere; and Irv Gotti’s ex-wife, Debbie Lorenzoco. Their idea was turned down and not too long after, Scott-Young’s “Love & Hip Hop” program was produced.
According to Scott-Young, however, she has yet to be served official court documents and instead read about the pending lawsuit online.
“Well, the one thing I will say is, I read it on the blogs just like everyone else did. So it seems like the only people they’ve served are TMZ and Bossip. I haven’t been served anything,” the show creator told MTV’s “Rap Fix Live.”
“But the thing is, it’s a reality show. I didn’t create these people because I didn’t give birth to them,” she added.
“All I did was shine a camera on a segment of the population that I knew well; I have 20+ years in hip hop.”
She also questioned why 8th Wonder waited so long to file a lawsuit considering that her “Love & Hip Hop” programs have been on television for six years.
“And listen the show has been on for six years and I just have to wonder did you just wake up one morning and say ‘Hey, I just remembered, I did that show and she stole it from me,’ ” said Young.
“I’m not at liberty to speak about it but, what I will say is that I just wanted everybody to use some common sense when processing the information. The truth will prevail that’s all I have to say. “
8th Wonder Entertainment is asking for $50 million for copyright infringement, fraud, breach of contract and breach of confidence.
