Atlanta based DJ Traci Steele opens up about her career and gives aspiring DJs advice.
What made you want to become a DJ?
I was a radio personality and DJ Babeydrew and I were working at the same radio station. I had to give him a ride one evening and as I was waiting on him [to leave the studio] another DJ said, “You look bored. Blend these two records.” I did [blend the records] and found out I was a natural born DJ and the rest is history.
When did you first fall in love with hip hop?
I actually first fell in love with reggae; my parents are Jamaican, so I grew up listening to reggae. As I got older around elementary school, hip hop became my world especially growing up in the Bronx.
What do you love most about what you do?
Rocking parties — the energy is amazing!
How important is your self image in what you do?
Well, you know what they say: images is everything! I try to remain classy and professional but on the show “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta” I’m a little of that plus a little crazy (laughs).
How do you figure out your mixes?
Depends on the crowd. I like to build at a party. Start at one level then turn up.
How do you balance work, building your brand and being a mother?
I have no idea; (laughs) I just work. I don’t have a lot of idle time. I try to stay organized and balance radio, TV, my houses, traveling, and being a mother. I’m also coming out with a lip gloss line — Steele Pretty Lip Gloss. I definitely need to stay organized and on top of things.
What advice would you give to budding DJs?
Remember this is a business and your name is your brand. Think of ways to market and promote your brand and think on a global scale.
What else do you have going on?
My Steele Pretty Lip Gloss line is launching in August. Log onto SteelePretty.com for the details. I also have a giveaway once a month for my pretty women. Follow #Steeleprettygiveaway. I’m giving away a gift bag filled with goodies like jewelry, makeup, nail polish, candles, a purse, basically all things girly. You can register to win the gift bag on SteelePretty.com.
